Prayer for Our Holy Catholic Church
Heavenly Father, we ask Thy blessing on our efforts. Show us the way to spread the Truth of the Catholic faith in the midst of error and infidelity. Fill our hearts with authentic love for our priests, bishops, pope (omit prayer when chair of Peter is empty) and all the clergy, a love that moves us to unceasing prayer for their souls and to constant exhortation to faithfully fulfill their sacred task of preaching the whole truth of the Catholic faith without compromise. Grant us wisdom in our deliberations, courage in exposing error and corruption, and humility and charity in all the things we do. Bless our Holy Father with the wisdom and holiness to discern and carry out Thy Will, and the loyalty and fidelity of bishops, priests and all Religious in helping him carry out this task. May Thy will be done in all things. We ask this through the intercession of our Holy Mother Mary and Saint Joseph.
Prayer for the Whole Church
Defend us, O Lord, we beseech thee, from all dangers both of body and soul: and at the intercession of the blessed and glorious ever-Virgin Mary, Mother of God, of blessed Joseph, of thy holy Apostles Peter and Paul, of blessed N., and of all thy saints, grant us thy saving health and peace; that being defended from all adversities and all false doctrines, thy Church may serve thee in pure and undisturbed devotion. Prayers for the Church, Government, Authorities, etc.
Composed by Archbishop Carroll, A.D. 1800
We pray, Thee O Almighty and Eternal God! Who through Jesus Christ hast revealed Thy glory to all nations, to preserve the works of Thy mercy, that Thy Church, being spread through the whole world, may continue with unchanging faith in the confession of Thy Name.
We pray Thee, who alone art good and holy, to endow with heavenly knowledge, sincere zeal, and sanctity of life, our chief bishop, Pope n., the Vicar of Our Lord Jesus Christ (omit prayer when chair of Peter is empty), in the government of his Church; our own bishop, n., all other bishops, prelates, and pastors of the Church; and especially those who are appointed to exercise amongst us the functions of the holy ministry, and conduct Thy people into the ways of salvation.
We pray Thee O God of might, wisdom, and justice! Through whom authority is rightly administered, laws are enacted, and judgment decreed, assist with Thy Holy Spirit of counsel and fortitude the President of these United States, that his administration may be conducted in righteousness, and be eminently useful to Thy people over whom he presides; by encouraging due respect for virtue and religion; by a faithful execution of the laws in justice and mercy; and by restraining vice and immorality. Let the light of Thy divine wisdom direct the deliberations of Congress, and shine forth in all the proceedings and laws framed for our rule and government, so that they may tend to the preservation of peace, the promotion of national happiness, the increase of industry, sobriety, and useful knowledge; and may perpetuate to us the blessing of equal liberty.
We pray for his Excellency, the governor of this state , for the members of the assembly, for all judges, magistrates, and other officers who are appointed to guard our political welfare, that they may be enabled, by Thy powerful protection, to discharge the duties of their respective stations with honesty and ability.
We recommend likewise, to Thy unbounded mercy, all our brethren and fellow citizens throughout the United States, that they may be blessed in the knowledge and sanctified in the observance of Thy most holy law; that they may be preserved in union, and in that peace which the world cannot give; and after enjoying the blessings of this life, be admitted to those which are eternal.
Finally, we pray to Thee, O Lord of mercy, to remember the souls of Thy servants departed who are gone before us with the sign of faith and repose in the sleep of peace; the souls of our parents, relatives, and friends; of those who, when living, were members of this congregation, and particularly of such as are lately deceased; of all benefactors who, by their donations or legacies to this Church, witnessed their zeal for the decency of divine worship and proved their claim to our grateful and charitable remembrance. To these, O Lord, and to all that rest in Christ, grant, we beseech Thee, a place of refreshment, light, and everlasting peace, through the same Jesus Christ, Our Lord and Savior. Amen.

Prayer before Study or Instructions
Incomprehensible Creator, the true fountain of light and only Author of all knowledge: vouchsafe, we beseech Thee, to enlighten our understandings and to remove from us all darkness of sin and ignorance. [ Thou, whom makes eloquent the tongues of those that want utterance, direct our tongues , and pour on our lips the grace of Thy blessing.] Give us a diligent and obedient spirit, quickness of apprehension, capacity of retaining, and the powerful assistance of Thy Holy grace; that what we hear or learn we may apply to Thy honor and Thee Eternal salvation of our own souls. Amen.
O Gracious Father, Maker and Preserver of Heaven and Earth, who in the beginning did institute matrimony, thereby foreshadowing the mystical union of the Church with Our Savior Christ, who in the time of His ministry upon earth, did honor marriage with His first miracle: enable me , I pray Thee , by Thy grace to live in holiness and purity with the wife whom Thou has given me. Mortify in me all violence of earthly passion, and selfishness and inconsiderateness (hear name any besetting sin which maybe a hindrance to you) , that I may love her as Christ loved His Church, cherish and comfort her as my own body and have as great care for her happiness as for my own. Grant that we may live in peace, without contention; in unity , without discord. [give us , O Lord , discreet hearts and understanding minds, to bring up our children in Thy faith and fear, that they may be obedient to Thee and to Thy commandments, and to all that Thou requires of them in duty towards their parents.] and give us, O Lord, a competency of estate, to maintain ourselves and our family according to that rank and calling wherein Thou has placed us, without excess or vain glory, in singleness and pureness of heart. Grant this for Jesus Christ sake, to whom with Thee and the Holy Ghost be all honor and glory, now and forever. Amen.
O Merciful Lord God, who in the beginning did take Eve out of the side of Adam and did give her to him as a helpmate: give me grace to live worthy of Thee honorable estate of matrimony to which Thou has called me , that I may love my husband with a pure and chaste love, acknowledging him as my head , and truly reverencing and obeying him in all good things; that thereby I may please him and live with him in all Christian quietness. Keep me from all wordliness and vanity. Help me, O Lord, that I may, under him, prudently and discreetly guide and govern his household. Let no fault of mine aggravate any sins by which he may be especially tempted; enable me to soothe him in perplexity, to cheer him in difficulty, to refresh him in weariness, and as far as may be, to advise him in doubt. [Give me understanding so to fulfill my part in the education of our children that they may be our joy in this world and our glory in the next.] Grant that our perfect union here may be the beginning of the still more perfect and blissful union hereafter in Thy kingdom; and this I pray through Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen.
O Lord Jesus Christ, Pattern of humility, who didst empty Thyself of Thy glory, and take upon Thee the form of a servant: root out of us all pride and conceit of heart, that, owning ourselves miserable and guilty sinners, we may willingly bear contempt and reproaches for Thy sake, and, glorying in nothing but Thee, may esteem ourselves lowly in Thy sight. Not unto us, O Lord, but to Thy name be the praise, for Thy loving mercy and for Thy truth’s sake. Amen.
O Lord Jesus Christ, who though Thou wast rich yet for our sakes didst become poor, grant that all over-eagerness and covetousness of earthly goods may die in us, and the desire of heavenly things may live and grow in us: keep us from all idle and vain expenditures, that we may always have to give to him that needeth, and that giving not grudgingly nor of necessity, but cheerfully, we may be loved of Thee, and be made through Thy merits partakers of the riches of Thy heavenly treasure. Amen.
O Lord Jesus Christ, Guardian of chaste souls, and lover of purity, who wast pleased to take our nature and to be born of an immaculate Virgin: mercifully look upon my infirmity. Create in me a clean heart, O God: and renew a right spirit within me ; help me to drive away all evil thoughts, to conquer every sinful desire, and so pierce my flesh with the fear of Thee that, this worst enemy being overcome, I may serve Thee with a chaste body and please Thee with a pure heart. Amen.
O most meek Jesus, Prince of Peace, who, when Thou wast reviled, didst not revile, and on the Cross didst pray for Thy murderers: implant in our hearts the virtues of gentleness and patience, that, restraining the fierceness of anger, impatience, and resentment, we may overcome evil with good, for Thy sake love our enemies, and as children of our heavenly Father seek peace and evermore rejoice in Thy love. Amen.
O Lord Jesus Christ, Mirror of abstinence, who, to teach us the virtue of abstinence, didst fast forty days and forty nights, grant that, serving Thee and not our own appetites, we may live soberly and piously with contentment, without greediness, gluttony, or drunkenness, that Thy will being our meat and drink, we may hunger and thirst after justice, and finally obtain from Thee that food which endureth unto life eternal. Amen.
O most loving Jesus, Pattern of charity, who makest all the commandments of the law to consist in love towards God and towards man, grant to us so to love Thee with all our heart, with all our mind, and all our soul, and our neighbor for Thy sake, that the grace of charity and brotherly love may dwell in us, and all envy, harshness, and ill-will may die in us ; and fill our hearts with love, kindness, and compassion, so that by constantly rejoicing in the happiness and success of others, by sympathizing with them in their sorrows, and putting away all harsh judgments and envious thoughts, we may follow Thee, who art Thyself the true and perfect love. Amen.
O Lord Jesus Christ, eternal Love, who in the garden didst pray so long and so fervently that Thy sweat was, as it were, drops of blood falling down to the ground: put away from us, we beseech Thee, all sloth and inactivity both of body and mind ; kindle within us the fire of Thy love ; strengthen our weakness, that whatsoever our hand is able to do we may do earnestly, and that, striving heartily to please Thee in this life, we may have Thee hereafter as our reward exceedingly great. Amen.

Our Father.

The Holy Father exhorts priests to say this prayer as often as possible, as a simple exorcism to curb the power of the devil and prevent him from doing harm. The faithful also may say it in their own name, for the same purpose, as any approved prayer. Its use is recommended whenever action of the devil is suspected, causing malice in men, violent temptations and even storms and various calamities.
Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel
+ In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.
Most glorious Prince of the Celestial Host, Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in the conflict which we have to sustain against principalities and powers, against the rulers of the world of this darkness, against the spirits of wickedness in the high places (Eph. 6.12). Come to the rescue of men whom God has created to His image and likeness, and whom He has redeemed at a great price from the tyranny of the devil. It is thou whom Holy Church venerates as her guardian and protector; thou whom the Lord has charged to conduct redeemed souls into Heaven. Pray, therefore, the God of Peace to subdue Satan beneath our feet, that he may no longer retain men captive nor do injury to the Church. Present our prayers to the most High, that without delay they may draw His mercy down upon us. Seize the dragon, the old serpent, which is the devil and Satan, bind him and cast him into the bottomless pit, that he may no more seduce the nations (Apoc. 20.2-3).
Exorcism
In the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, strengthened by the intercession of the Immaculate Virgin Mary, Mother of God, of Blessed Michael the Archangel, of the Blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, and all the Saints, [and powerful in the holy authority of our ministry]*, we confidently undertake to repulse the attacks and deceits of the devil.
*Lay people omit this text
Psalm 67
Let God arise, and let His enemies be scattered: and let them that hate Him flee from before His face.
As smoke vanishes, so let them vanish away: as wax melts before the fire, so let the wicked perish at the presence of God.
V.
Behold the Cross of the Lord! Flee, bands of enemies.
R. The Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Offspring of David has conquered.
V. May Thy mercy descend upon us.
R. As great as our hope in Thee.
(The crosses (+) below indicate a blessing to be given if a priest recites the Exorcism; if a lay person recites it, they indicate the Sign of the Cross to be made by that person.)
We drive you from us, whoever you may be, unclean spirits, Satanic powers, infernal invaders, wicked legions, assemblies, and sects. In the name and by the virtue of Our Lord Jesus Christ +. May you be snatched away and driven from the Church of God and from the souls redeemed by the Precious Blood of the Divine Lamb +.
Cease by your audacity, cunning serpent, to deceive the human race, to persecute the Church, to torment God's elect, and to sift them as wheat +. This is the command made to you by the Most High God +, with Whom in your haughty insolence you still pretend to be equal +. The God Who will have all men to be saved, and to come to the knowledge of the truth (I Tim. 2.4). God the Father commands you +. God the Son commands you +. God the Holy Ghost commands you +. Christ, the Eternal Word of God made Flesh, commands you +. He Who to save our race, outdone through your malice, humbled Himself, becoming obedient unto death (Phil. 2.8). He Who has built His Church on the firm rock and declared that the gates of hell shall not prevail against Her, because He dwells with Her all days, even to the consummation of the world (Matt. 28.20). The hidden virtue of the Cross requires it of you, as does the power of the mysteries of the Christian Faith +. The glorious Mother of God, the Virgin Mary, commands you +. She who by Her humility and from the first moment of Her Immaculate Conception crushed your proud head. The faith of the holy Apostles Peter and Paul and of the other Apostles commands you +. The blood of the Martyrs and the pious intercession of all the Saints command you +.
Thus, cursed dragon, and you, wicked legions, we adjure you by the living God +, by the true God +, by the holy God +, by the God Who so loved the world, as to give up His only-begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him may not perish but may have life everlasting (St. John 3.16). Cease deceiving human creatures and pouring out to them the poison of eternal perdition. Cease harming the Church and hindering her liberty. Retreat, Satan, inventor and master of all deceit, enemy of man's salvation. Cede the place to Christ in Whom you have found none of your works. Cede the place to the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church acquired by Christ at the price of His Blood. Stoop beneath the all-powerful Hand of God. Tremble and flee at the evocation of the Holy and terrible name of Jesus; this Name which causes hell to tremble; this Name to which the Virtues, Powers and Dominations of Heaven are humbly submissive; this Name which the Cherubim and Seraphim praise unceasingly, repeating: Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord, the God of Hosts.
V.
O Lord hear my prayer.
R. And let my cry come unto Thee.
V. May the Lord be with thee.
R. And with thy spirit.
Let us pray.
God of Heaven, God of earth, God of Angels, God of Archangels, God of Patriarchs, God of Prophets, God of Apostles, God of Martyrs, God of Confessors, God of Virgins, God who has power to give life after death and rest after work, because there is no other God than Thee and there can be no other, for Thou art the Creator of all things, visible and invisible, of Whose reign there shall be no end. We humbly prostrate ourselves before Thy glorious Majesty and we supplicate Thee to deliver us from all the tyranny of the infernal spirits, from their snares, their lies, and their furious wickedness. Deign, O Lord, to protect us by Thy power and to preserve us safe and sound. We beseech Thee through Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen.
V.
From the snares of the devil,
R. Deliver us, O Lord.
V.
That Thy Church may serve Thee in peace and liberty,
R. We beseech Thee to hear us.
V.
That Thou would crush down all enemies of Thy Church,
R. We beseech Thee to hear us.
(Holy water is sprinkled in the place where we may be.)
Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle, be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the Divine Power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who wander throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

A
Prayer in Depression and Grief
O LORD JESUS CHRIST, my Suffering Savior, Who found Thyself in utter
desolation and abandonment in Thy Passion and Crucifixion, strengthen
me by Thy Holy Passion, and raise me up from my state of depression and
downcastness.
"OUT OF THE DEPTHS, I CRY UNTO THEE, O LORD," I cry in the words of Thy
Psalmist. Lift up my spirit from its state of dejection and abandonment.
From the depths of my loneliness and lowliness, raise me up to the new hope and
comfort, and keep me from falling into despair and despondency.
O MY JESUS, Who Thyself suffered such abandonment, raise me up in a happy
resurrection from my pitiful state.
O HOLY VIRGIN MARY, SORROWFUL MOTHER, who thyself shared in the sufferings
and desolation of thy Divine Son, be for me a true Comfort of the Afflicted
and a true Refuge, now and forever. AMEN.
Fr. Lawrence S. Brey:
November 28, 2002,
Feast of St. Catherine Laboure
Father Lawrence Brey was born on July 12, 1927 in
Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the son of devout Catholic parents. Even from his very
youth his extraordinary intelligence became apparent to all. Because of his
piety, humility and devotion to prayer he was encouraged to study for the
priesthood and was sent to St. Francis de Sales seminary. He was ordained by
Bishop Roman Altkeilski on May 30, 1945.
At the age of 79, Father Lawrence Severinus Brey died in the evening of November
26, 2006, in a rest home in Minnesota where he had been living for over a year.
He suffered much from chronic leg trouble, which ultimately resulted in
infection and inflammation that required daily treatment of cleansing and
re-bandaging. Eventually he was unable to walk. Coupled with this disability was
a cancerous spot on his tongue that was successfully removed. Because of these
sufferings towards the end of his mortal life we can surely hope that his
purgatory has been shortened.
Fr. Brey is a great example to all Catholics of moral courage, and final
perseverance. He was a faithful son of Holy Mother Church. Through the bonds of
faith, hope and charity he struggled in the darkest times of the Church, when
the enemies attacked the Faith, as well as the faith of millions, right before
his eyes. He stood firmly, and fought valiantly, with the God-given strength of
thousands to preserve our Faith and the holy Mass. He assisted in thousands of
conversions, through his service as a faithful Alter Christus his whole priestly
life. May we never ever forget this brave and faithful warrior, yet kind and
jolly priest, for the gifts he gave us all, and has left us of beautiful
sermons, poems, prayers, and most importantly, the holy Mass.
Eternal rest grant unto him O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May
his soul, and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God,
rest in peace. Amen.
Please kindly offer prayers, sacrifices, and Masses for the repose of the soul

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be to the Father, etc.
(Indulgence of 100 days each time.- PIUS IX. June 18, 1876)
Most Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, behold us prostrate in Thy divine presence. We humble ourselves profoundly and beg of Thee pardon for our sins. We adore Thee, omnipotent Father, and with the outpouring of our hearts we thank Thee for having given us Thy divine Son Jesus to be our Redeemer, and for having left Him with us to the consummation of the world in the most august Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist, in which mystery of faith and love He reveals to us the wonders of His Sacred Heart.
(Please say one Glory Be to the Father, etc.)
O Divine Word, most adorable Jesus, our Redeemer, we adore Thee in Thy Sacrament, and with the outpouring of our hearts we thank Thee for having taken human flesh and for having made Thyself, for our redemption, both Priest and Victim in the sacrifice of the Cross, a sacrifice which, by an excess of the love of Thy adorable Sacred Heart, Thou dost renew every moment on our altars throughout the world. O Supreme Priest, O divine Victim, grant us the grace to honor Thy holy sacrifice in the most adorable Eucharist with the homage of Mary most holy and of all Thy Holy Church, triumphant, suffering and warfare. We offer ourselves wholly to Thee, and since Thou dost deign to have victims associated with Thee, accept our offering, and, uniting it with Thine, bless us.
(Say one Glory Be to the Father, etc.)
O Divine Spirit the Paraclete, we adore Thee and with the outpourings of our hearts we give Thee thanks that Thou hast, with such great love for us, wrought the ineffable blessings of the Incarnation of the Word of God, a blessing which is being continually extended and enlarged in the most august Sacrament of the Eucharist. Ah, by this adorable mystery of love of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, do Thou grant unto us and all poor sinners Thy holy grace. Pour forth Thy holy gifts upon us and upon all redeemed souls, and in an especial manner upon Holy Church, the spouse of Jesus Christ and our mother, upon its visible head, the supreme Roman Pontiff (omit prayer when seat is empty), upon all Cardinals, Bishops and Pastors of souls, upon Priests and all other ministers of Thy sanctuary. Amen.
(Glory Be to the Father, etc.)

ACT OF THANKSGIVING FOR THE BLESSSINGS OF THE PAST YEAR
O God, the beginning and the end of all things, Who art always the selfsame, and
Whose years fail not, we now, at the close of another year, kneel in adoration
before Thee, and offer Thee our deepest gratitude for the fatherly care with
which Thou has watched over us during the past, for the many times Thou hast
shielded us from evils of soul and body, and for the numberless blessings, both
temporal and spiritual, which Thou hast showered upon us. May it please Thee to
accept the homage of our grateful hearts which we offer Thee in union with the
infinite thanksgiving of Thy divine Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, Who with Thee
liveth and reigneth forever and ever. Amen.
SUPPLICATION AND RESOLUTIONS FOR THE NEW YEAR
O Eternal Father, after having thanked thy infinite bounty for thy exceeding benefits in the past, we humbly implore pardon for our manifold sins and negligences, for the time we have consumed and wasted in vanities and in things that profit not unto salvation, and for the woeful want of correspondence with Thy graces which we have so habitually manifested.
But filled with confidence in Thy mercy, so lavishly displayed in a multitude of ways, we ask Thy blessings upon our good purposes and resolutions. For now we renew the sacred promises we made in Baptism, when we first became Thy children and heirs of the heavenly kingdom, and we renounce Satan with all his works and pomps.
Firmly convinced that the salvation of our immortal souls is the one great business of life, the purpose for which we have come into the world, we solemnly resolve for the future not only to do all in our power to avoid every grievous sin in thought, word, and deed but also to shun every unnecessary occasion that might imperil our souls. We further resolve to fulfill with greater exactness and fidelity the duties of our station in life, to give more attention to our progress in things spiritual, to be more devoted to holy Mass, to receive the Sacraments more frequently, and to pray more often and more fervently.
Bless, O my God, these good resolutions which we offer to Thee at this, the threshold of a new year. Give us Thy precious grace and make us truly wise. The days and years of our life are passing so swiftly away. Help us, in Thy mercy, to utilize them, as we ought to do, for Thy greater honor and glory, for the good of our neighbor, and for our sanctification. The night cometh in which no man can work longer; soon, at best, we shall have to appear before Thee to render an account of our stewardship. May we then be found worthy to receive from Thee that divine welcome: “Well done, good and faithful servants, enter into the joy of thy Lord.”
HYMN OF THANKSGIVING
(From the Te Deum)
Holy God, we praise Thy name!
Lord of all, we bow before Thee!
All on earth Thy scepter claim,
All in heav’n above adore Thee:
Infinite Thy vast domain,
Everlasting is Thy reign.
Hark! The loud celestial hymn,
Angel choirs above are raising!
Cherubim and seraphim,
In unceasing chorus praising,
Fill the heavens with sweet accord;
Holy, holy, holy Lord.
Holy father, holy Son,
Holy Spirit, three we name Thee,
While in essence only one,
Undivided God we claim Thee;
And adoring bend the knee,
While we own the mystery.
V. Let us bless the Father and the Son with the Holy Ghost.
R. Let us praise and exalt Him above all forever.
Let us Pray
O God, Whose mercy is without measure and the treasure of Whose goodness is infinite, we give thanks to Thy most comforting Majesty for the gifts conferred upon us, and we beg Thee continually through Thy clemency, that Thou Who grantest the request of those who ask Thee, mayest not abandon them now but rather dispose them for future rewards. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
OLD YEAR AND NEW YEAR
(From Lapsus est Annus)
A year is dead, a year is born;
Thus time flies by on silent wing:
Thou, Lord, alone canst guide our course
And safe to heaven Thy people bring.
For all past gifts we render thanks;
For graces new we humbly pray.
Oh, grant that we and those we love
May ne’er from faith and duty stray.
O Lord, our daily wants supply;
Protect from sickness and disease;
And deign to give, O God of love
The blessings of unbroken peace.
Oh, blot out all our ancient sins
And give us strength to fall no more;
When fight is o’er and victory won,
Then crown us on the eternal shore.
For all the old year’s sins we grieve;
Our hearts we consecrate to Thee.
Grant us, when all our years are sped,
Our heavenly father’s face to see.
PRAYER FOR A BLESSING ON THE NEW YEAR
O sacred and adorable Trinity, hear our prayers on behalf of our holy Father the Pope (omit prayer when chair of Peter is empty),, our Bishops, our clergy, and for all that are in authority over us. Bless, we beseech Thee, during the coming year, the whole Catholic Church; convert heretics and unbelievers; soften the hearts of sinners so that they may return to Thy friendship; give prosperity to our country and peace among the nations of the world; pour down Thy blessings upon our friends, relatives, and acquaintances, and upon our enemies, if we have any; assist the poor and the sick; have pity on the souls of those whom this year has taken from us; and do Thou be merciful to those who during the coming year will be summoned before Thy judgment seat. May all our actions be preceded by Thy inspirations and carried on by Thy assistance, so that all our prayers and works, having been begun in Thee, may likewise be ended through Thee. Amen.
THE SHORTNESS OF LIFE
(Psalm LXXXIX)
Lord, Thou hast been our refuge from generation to generation. Before the mountains were made, or the earth and the world was formed; from eternity to eternity Thou art God. Thou makest man to return to atoms, and sayest, return, ye children of men. For a thousand years in Thy sight are as yesterday when it is past,And as a watch in the night. Thou carriest them (men) away as with a flood; they are as a sleep. In the morning they are like grass which growth up. In the morning it flourisheth and growth up; in the evening it fadeth, growth dry, and withereth. For in Thin anger we are consumed, and in Thy wrath we are troubled. Thou hast set our iniquities before Thine eyes, our secret sins in the light of Thy countenance. For all our days are past away in Thy wrath; our years are consumed as a sigh. The days of our years are threescore and ten; and if in the strong they are fourscore years, yet their pride is but labor and sorrow; for it is soon past, and we fly away. Who knoweth the power of Thine anger, and Thy wrath according to the fear that is due Thee? So teach us to number our days, that we may have a heart of wisdom. Return, O’Lord, how long? And be entreated in favor of Thy servants. O satisfy us in the morning with Thy loving-kindness, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days. Make us glad according to the days in which we have been afflicted and their years wherein we have seen evil. Look upon Thy servants and upon their works, and direct their children. And the gracious kindness of the Lord Our God be upon us, and direct Thou the works of our hands upon us; Yea, the work of our hands, do Thou direct.
THE EVENING OF LIFE
(From the Rerum Deus)
O Strength, and stay upholden all creation,
who ever dost Thyself unmoved abide,
yet day by day the light in due gradation
from hour to hour through its changes guide:
Grant to life’s day a calm, unclouded ending,
and eve, untouched by shadows of decay,
the brightness of a holy death-bed blending
with dawning glories of th’ eternal day.
Hear us, O Father, gracious and forgiven,
And Thou, O Christ, the co-eternal Word,
Who, with the Holy Ghost, by all things living
Now and to endless ages art adored.
The Chair of Unity Octave
January 18th through January
25th
The Chair of Unity Octave, which extends from the Feast of the Chair of St. Peter at Rome (January 18) until the Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul (January 25), which prayers are prescribed for each separate day of the Octave
History of The Chair of Unity Octave
On October 3, 1899, the eve of the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, the Rev. Lewis Thomas Wattson, an Episcopal clergyman later known as the Very Rev. Paul James Francis, S.A., arrived at Graymoor, N.Y. to establish a community of Episcopal Franciscans called the Friars of the Atonement. A year previously, Miss Lurana White, a devout young woman, had founded in the same place a community of Episcopal nuns known as the Sisters of the Atonement.
For ten years the two communities were jointly known as the Society of the Atonement and lived the monastic life as members of the Protestant Episcopal Church. Looking about him on a largely irreligious world, Father Paul grieved most because Christians seemed divided into warring sects and factions. He began to preach corporate reunion of the Episcopal Church with the Roman Catholic Church. Because of this he was banned from the pulpits of the Episcopal Church.
In his brown robe and sandals, Father Paul took his message to the streets and parks of New York. He caused quite a sensation. Father Paul James Francis was determined to carry on a vigorous apostolate for the return of all separated Christians to communion with the Holy See. To further this aim, he inaugurated in 1908 the Chair of Unity Octave (Jan. 18-25).
One year later, the members of the Society themselves received the grace of conversion, and on October 30, 1909, they entered the Catholic Church in a body. It astonished no one when he took his own advice and brought his community with him into the Catholic Church. With the blessing of Pope St. Pius X, they were permitted to continue as a religious society in the Catholic Church and were commissioned to carry on the apostolate of Christian unity as their community aim.
The Chair of Unity Octave was also approved as a Catholic devotion by Pope Benedict XV in an Apostolic Brief in 1916. In 1921, at their annual meeting in Washington, the Catholic hierarchy of the United States unanimously adopted the Octave for all the dioceses in the country.
Under the patronage of St. Peter, the first Vicar of Christ, Bishop of Rome, and St. Paul, the Apostle of the Gentiles, the Chair of Unity Octave has flourished and grown. It is now observed in many parts of the world.

PRAYER FOR ANOTHER'S CONVERSION
O Divine and adorable Savior, thou who art the Way, the Truth, and the Life, I
beseech thee to have mercy upon (N.) and bring him to the knowledge and
love of Thy Truth. Thou, O Lord, knowest all his darkness, his weakness, and
his doubts; have pity upon him, O merciful Savior; let the bright beams of Thy
Eternal Truth shine upon his mind; clear away the cloud of error and of
prejudice from his eyes, and may he himself submit to the teaching of Thy
Church. Oh, let not the soul for whom I pray, be shut out from Thy blesses
fold! Unite him to Thyself in the sacraments of Thy love and grant that
partaking of the blessings of Thy grace in this life, he may come at last to the
possession of those eternal rewards which Thou hast promised to all who believe
in Thee, and who do Thy will. Hear this my petition, O merciful Jesus, Who, with
the Father and the Holy Ghost, livest and
reignest for ever and ever. Amen.
