Prayers of the Church

Prayer for Our Holy Catholic Church

Heavenly Father, we ask Thy blessing on our efforts. Show us the way to spread the Truth of the Catholic faith in the midst of error and infidelity. Fill our hearts with authentic love for our priests, bishops, pope (omit prayer when chair of Peter is empty) and all the clergy, a love that moves us to unceasing prayer for their souls and to constant exhortation to faithfully fulfill their sacred task of preaching the whole truth of the Catholic faith without compromise. Grant us wisdom in our deliberations, courage in exposing error and corruption, and humility and charity in all the things we do. Bless our Holy Father with the wisdom and holiness to discern and carry out Thy Will, and the loyalty and fidelity of bishops, priests and all Religious in helping him carry out this task. May Thy will be done in all things. We ask this through the intercession of our Holy Mother Mary and Saint Joseph.

Prayer for the Whole Church

Defend us, O Lord, we beseech thee, from all dangers both of body and soul: and at the intercession of the blessed and glorious ever-Virgin Mary, Mother of God, of blessed Joseph, of thy holy Apostles Peter and Paul, of blessed N., and of all thy saints, grant us thy saving health and peace; that being defended from all adversities and all false doctrines, thy Church may serve thee in pure and undisturbed devotion. Amen.

Prayers for the Church, Government, Authorities, etc.

Composed by Archbishop Carroll, A.D. 1800

We pray, Thee O Almighty and Eternal God! Who through Jesus Christ hast revealed Thy glory to all nations, to preserve the works of Thy mercy, that Thy Church, being spread through the whole world, may continue with unchanging faith in the confession of Thy Name.

We pray Thee, who alone art good and holy, to endow with heavenly knowledge, sincere zeal, and sanctity of life, our chief bishop, Pope n., the Vicar of Our Lord Jesus Christ (omit prayer when chair of Peter is empty), in the government of his Church; our own bishop, n., all other bishops, prelates, and pastors of the Church; and especially those who are appointed to exercise amongst us the functions of the holy ministry, and conduct Thy people into the ways of salvation.

We pray Thee O God of might, wisdom, and justice! Through whom authority is rightly administered, laws are enacted, and judgment decreed, assist with Thy Holy Spirit of counsel and fortitude the President of these United States, that his administration may be conducted in righteousness, and be eminently useful to Thy people over whom he presides; by encouraging due respect for virtue and religion; by a faithful execution of the laws in justice and mercy; and by restraining vice and immorality. Let the light of Thy divine wisdom direct the deliberations of Congress, and shine forth in all the proceedings and laws framed for our rule and government, so that they may tend to the preservation of peace, the promotion of national happiness, the increase of industry, sobriety, and useful knowledge; and may perpetuate to us the blessing of equal liberty.

We pray for his Excellency, the governor of this state , for the members of the assembly, for all judges, magistrates, and other officers who are appointed to guard our political welfare, that they may be enabled, by Thy powerful protection, to discharge the duties of their respective stations with honesty and ability.

We recommend likewise, to Thy unbounded mercy, all our brethren and fellow citizens throughout the United States, that they may be blessed in the knowledge and sanctified in the observance of Thy most holy law; that they may be preserved in union, and in that peace which the world cannot give; and after enjoying the blessings of this life, be admitted to those which are eternal.

Finally, we pray to Thee, O Lord of mercy, to remember the souls of Thy servants departed who are gone before us with the sign of faith and repose in the sleep of peace; the souls of our parents, relatives, and friends; of those who, when living, were members of this congregation, and particularly of such as are lately deceased; of all benefactors who, by their donations or legacies to this Church, witnessed their zeal for the decency of divine worship and proved their claim to our grateful and charitable remembrance. To these, O Lord, and to all that rest in Christ, grant, we beseech Thee, a place of refreshment, light, and everlasting peace, through the same Jesus Christ, Our Lord and Savior. Amen.

Prayer before Study or Instructions

Incomprehensible Creator, the true fountain of light and only Author of all knowledge: vouchsafe, we beseech Thee, to enlighten our understandings and to remove from us all darkness of sin and ignorance. [ Thou, whom makes eloquent the tongues of those that want utterance, direct our tongues , and pour on our lips the grace of Thy blessing.] Give us a diligent and obedient spirit, quickness of apprehension, capacity of retaining, and the powerful assistance of Thy Holy grace; that what we hear or learn we may apply to Thy honor and Thee Eternal salvation of our own souls. Amen.

A Husband's Prayer

O Gracious Father, Maker and Preserver of Heaven and Earth, who in the beginning did institute matrimony, thereby foreshadowing the mystical union of the Church with Our Savior Christ, who in the time of His ministry upon earth, did honor marriage with His first miracle: enable me , I pray Thee , by Thy grace to live in holiness and purity with the wife whom Thou has given me. Mortify in me all violence of earthly passion, and selfishness and inconsiderateness (hear name any besetting sin which maybe a hindrance to you) , that I may love her as Christ loved His Church, cherish and comfort her as my own body and have as great care for her happiness as for my own. Grant that we may live in peace, without contention; in unity , without discord. [give us , O Lord , discreet hearts and understanding minds, to bring up our children in Thy faith and fear, that they may be obedient to Thee and to Thy commandments, and to all that Thou requires of them in duty towards their parents.] and give us, O Lord, a competency of estate, to maintain ourselves and our family according to that rank and calling wherein Thou has placed us, without excess or vain glory, in singleness and pureness of heart. Grant this for Jesus Christ sake, to whom with Thee and the Holy Ghost be all honor and glory, now and forever. Amen.

A Wife's Prayer

O Merciful Lord God, who in the beginning did take Eve out of the side of Adam and did give her to him as a helpmate: give me grace to live worthy of Thee honorable estate of matrimony to which Thou has called me , that I may love my husband with a pure and chaste love, acknowledging him as my head , and truly reverencing and obeying him in all good things; that thereby I may please him and live with him in all Christian quietness. Keep me from all wordliness and vanity. Help me, O Lord, that I may, under him, prudently and discreetly guide and govern his household. Let no fault of mine aggravate any sins by which he may be especially tempted; enable me to soothe him in perplexity, to cheer him in difficulty, to refresh him in weariness, and as far as may be, to advise him in doubt. [Give me understanding so to fulfill my part in the education of our children that they may be our joy in this world and our glory in the next.] Grant that our perfect union here may be the beginning of the still more perfect and blissful union hereafter in Thy kingdom; and this I pray through Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen.

Prayers Against the Seven Deadly Sins

Prayer Against Pride

O Lord Jesus Christ, Pattern of humility, who didst empty Thyself of Thy glory, and take upon Thee the form of a servant: root out of us all pride and conceit of heart, that, owning ourselves miserable and guilty sinners, we may willingly bear contempt and reproaches for Thy sake, and, glorying in nothing but Thee, may esteem ourselves lowly in Thy sight. Not unto us, O Lord, but to Thy name be the praise, for Thy loving mercy and for Thy truth’s sake. Amen.

Prayer Against Covetousness

O Lord Jesus Christ, who though Thou wast rich yet for our sakes didst become poor, grant that all over-eagerness and covetousness of earthly goods may die in us, and the desire of heavenly things may live and grow in us: keep us from all idle and vain expenditures, that we may always have to give to him that needeth, and that giving not grudgingly nor of necessity, but cheerfully, we may be loved of Thee, and be made through Thy merits partakers of the riches of Thy heavenly treasure. Amen.

Prayer Against Lust

O Lord Jesus Christ, Guardian of chaste souls, and lover of purity, who wast pleased to take our nature and to be born of an immaculate Virgin: mercifully look upon my infirmity. Create in me a clean heart, O God: and renew a right spirit within me ; help me to drive away all evil thoughts, to conquer every sinful desire, and so pierce my flesh with the fear of Thee that, this worst enemy being overcome, I may serve Thee with a chaste body and please Thee with a pure heart. Amen.

Prayer Against Anger

O most meek Jesus, Prince of Peace, who, when Thou wast reviled, didst not revile, and on the Cross didst pray for Thy murderers: implant in our hearts the virtues of gentleness and patience, that, restraining the fierceness of anger, impatience, and resentment, we may overcome evil with good, for Thy sake love our enemies, and as children of our heavenly Father seek peace and evermore rejoice in Thy love. Amen.

Prayer Against Glutony

O Lord Jesus Christ, Mirror of abstinence, who, to teach us the virtue of abstinence, didst fast forty days and forty nights, grant that, serving Thee and not our own appetites, we may live soberly and piously with contentment, without greediness, gluttony, or drunkenness, that Thy will being our meat and drink, we may hunger and thirst after justice, and finally obtain from Thee that food which endureth unto life eternal. Amen.

Prayer Against Envy

O most loving Jesus, Pattern of charity, who makest all the commandments of the law to consist in love towards God and towards man, grant to us so to love Thee with all our heart, with all our mind, and all our soul, and our neighbor for Thy sake, that the grace of charity and brotherly love may dwell in us, and all envy, harshness, and ill-will may die in us ; and fill our hearts with love, kindness, and compassion, so that by constantly rejoicing in the happiness and success of others, by sympathizing with them in their sorrows, and putting away all harsh judgments and envious thoughts, we may follow Thee, who art Thyself the true and perfect love. Amen.

Prayer Against Sloth

O Lord Jesus Christ, eternal Love, who in the garden didst pray so long and so fervently that Thy sweat was, as it were, drops of blood falling down to the ground: put away from us, we beseech Thee, all sloth and inactivity both of body and mind ; kindle within us the fire of Thy love ; strengthen our weakness, that whatsoever our hand is able to do we may do earnestly, and that, striving heartily to please Thee in this life, we may have Thee hereafter as our reward exceedingly great. Amen.

(Against the Seven Deadly Sins)

I.

O most humble Lord and Master, Jesus Christ, true God and true Man, eternal praise and thanksgiving be to Thee, because in Thy tenderest age, on the eighth day of Thy mortal life, Thou didst vouchsafe to shed Thy precious and innocent Blood for us, and as a true Son of Abraham to bear the pain of circumcision.

Our Father.

O Savior of the world, etc.

Our Father.

O Savior of the world, etc.

Our Father.

O Savior of the world, etc.

V.

O most sweet Jesus Christ, Pattern of temperance and self-denial, true God and true Man, eternal praise and thanksgiving be to Thee, because Thou didst allow Thy garments to be torn from Thy bleeding body both before and after the carrying of Thy Cross, which opened Thy wounds again, and caused them to bleed afresh.

By this most holy shedding of Thy Blood, I beseech of Thee the grace of temperance and abstinence against all greediness and gluttony.

Our Father.

O Savior of the world, etc.

VI.

O good and faithful Samaritan, Jesus Christ, true God and true Man, eternal praise and thanksgiving be to Thee, because out of Thy burning love for us Thou didst suffer Thy sacred Hands and Feet to be pierced and nailed to the Cross for our redemption.

By this most holy shedding of Thy Blood, I beg of Thee the grace of brotherly love against all envy and jealousy.

Our Father.

O Savior of the world, etc.

VII.

O most zealous High-Priest, true God and true Man, eternal praise and thanksgiving be to Thee, because Thou didst suffer Thy sacred side to be pierced, opened, and wounded with a  spear.

By this most holy shedding of Thy Blood, I earnestly pray Thee for the grace of holy zeal and fervor against all sloth and weariness in Thy service, and in every religious exercise.

Our Father.

O Savior of the world, etc.

Exorcism Against Satan and the Rebellious Angels

Published by Order of His Holiness Pope Leo XIII

The Holy Father exhorts priests to say this prayer as often as possible, as a simple exorcism to curb the power of the devil and prevent him from doing harm. The faithful also may say it in their own name, for the same purpose, as any approved prayer. Its use is recommended whenever action of the devil is suspected, causing malice in men, violent temptations and even storms and various calamities.

Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel

+ In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

Most glorious Prince of the Celestial Host, Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in the conflict which we have to sustain against principalities and powers, against the rulers of the world of this darkness, against the spirits of wickedness in the high places (Eph. 6.12). Come to the rescue of men whom God has created to His image and likeness, and whom He has redeemed at a great price from the tyranny of the devil. It is thou whom Holy Church venerates as her guardian and protector; thou whom the Lord has charged to conduct redeemed souls into Heaven. Pray, therefore, the God of Peace to subdue Satan beneath our feet, that he may no longer retain men captive nor do injury to the Church. Present our prayers to the most High, that without delay they may draw His mercy down upon us. Seize the dragon, the old serpent, which is the devil and Satan, bind him and cast him into the bottomless pit, that he may no more seduce the nations (Apoc. 20.2-3).

Exorcism

In the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, strengthened by the intercession of the Immaculate Virgin Mary, Mother of God, of Blessed Michael the Archangel, of the Blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, and all the Saints, [and powerful in the holy authority of our ministry]*, we confidently undertake to repulse the attacks and deceits of the devil.

*Lay people omit this text

Psalm 67

Let God arise, and let His enemies be scattered: and let them that hate Him flee from before His face.

As smoke vanishes, so let them vanish away: as wax melts before the fire, so let the wicked perish at the presence of God.

V. Behold the Cross of the Lord! Flee, bands of enemies.
R. The Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Offspring of David has conquered.
V. May Thy mercy descend upon us.
R. As great as our hope in Thee.

(The crosses (+) below indicate a blessing to be given if a priest recites the Exorcism; if a lay person recites it, they indicate the Sign of the Cross to be made by that person.)

We drive you from us, whoever you may be, unclean spirits, Satanic powers, infernal invaders, wicked legions, assemblies, and sects. In the name and by the virtue of Our Lord Jesus Christ +. May you be snatched away and driven from the Church of God and from the souls redeemed by the Precious Blood of the Divine Lamb +.

Cease by your audacity, cunning serpent, to deceive the human race, to persecute the Church, to torment God's elect, and to sift them as wheat +. This is the command made to you by the Most High God +, with Whom in your haughty insolence you still pretend to be equal +. The God Who will have all men to be saved, and to come to the knowledge of the truth (I Tim. 2.4). God the Father commands you +. God the Son commands you +. God the Holy Ghost commands you +. Christ, the Eternal Word of God made Flesh, commands you +. He Who to save our race, outdone through your malice, humbled Himself, becoming obedient unto death (Phil. 2.8). He Who has built His Church on the firm rock and declared that the gates of hell shall not prevail against Her, because He dwells with Her all days, even to the consummation of the world (Matt. 28.20). The hidden virtue of the Cross requires it of you, as does the power of the mysteries of the Christian Faith +. The glorious Mother of God, the Virgin Mary, commands you +. She who by Her humility and from the first moment of Her Immaculate Conception crushed your proud head. The faith of the holy Apostles Peter and Paul and of the other Apostles commands you +. The blood of the Martyrs and the pious intercession of all the Saints command you +

Thus, cursed dragon, and you, wicked legions, we adjure you by the living God +, by the true God +, by the holy God +, by the God Who so loved the world, as to give up His only-begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him may not perish but may have life everlasting (St. John 3.16). Cease deceiving human creatures and pouring out to them the poison of eternal perdition. Cease harming the Church and hindering her liberty. Retreat, Satan, inventor and master of all deceit, enemy of man's salvation. Cede the place to Christ in Whom you have found none of your works. Cede the place to the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church acquired by Christ at the price of His Blood. Stoop beneath the all-powerful Hand of God. Tremble and flee at the evocation of the Holy and terrible name of Jesus; this Name which causes hell to tremble; this Name to which the Virtues, Powers and Dominations of Heaven are humbly submissive; this Name which the Cherubim and Seraphim praise unceasingly, repeating: Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord, the God of Hosts.

V. O Lord hear my prayer.
R. And let my cry come unto Thee.
V. May the Lord be with thee.
R. And with thy spirit.

Let us pray.

God of Heaven, God of earth, God of Angels, God of Archangels, God of Patriarchs, God of Prophets, God of Apostles, God of Martyrs, God of Confessors, God of Virgins, God who has power to give life after death and rest after work, because there is no other God than Thee and there can be no other, for Thou art the Creator of all things, visible and invisible, of Whose reign there shall be no end. We humbly prostrate ourselves before Thy glorious Majesty and we supplicate Thee to deliver us from all the tyranny of the infernal spirits, from their snares, their lies, and their furious wickedness. Deign, O Lord, to protect us by Thy power and to preserve us safe and sound. We beseech Thee through Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen.

V.  From the snares of the devil,
R.  Deliver us, O Lord.

V.  That Thy Church may serve Thee in peace and liberty,
R.  We beseech Thee to hear us.

V.  That Thou would crush down all enemies of Thy Church,
R.  We beseech Thee to hear us.

(Holy water is sprinkled in the place where we may be.)

Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle, be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the Divine Power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who wander throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

*Indulgence of 300 days, plenary under the usual conditions, if this invocation is recited daily during a month.

A Prayer in Depression and Grief

O LORD JESUS CHRIST, my Suffering Savior, Who found Thyself in utter
desolation and abandonment in Thy Passion and Crucifixion, strengthen
me by Thy Holy Passion, and raise me up from my state of depression and
downcastness.

"OUT OF THE DEPTHS, I CRY UNTO THEE, O LORD," I cry in the words of Thy
Psalmist. Lift up my spirit from its state of dejection and abandonment.
From the depths of my loneliness and lowliness, raise me up to the new hope and
comfort, and keep me from falling into despair and despondency.

O MY JESUS, Who Thyself suffered such abandonment, raise me up in a happy
resurrection from my pitiful state.

O HOLY VIRGIN MARY, SORROWFUL MOTHER, who thyself shared in the sufferings
and desolation of thy Divine Son, be for me a true Comfort of the Afflicted
and a true Refuge, now and forever. AMEN.

Fr. Lawrence S. Brey:

November 28, 2002,

Feast of St. Catherine Laboure

Father Lawrence Brey was born on July 12, 1927 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the son of devout Catholic parents. Even from his very youth his extraordinary intelligence became apparent to all. Because of his piety, humility and devotion to prayer he was encouraged to study for the priesthood and was sent to St. Francis de Sales seminary. He was ordained by Bishop Roman Altkeilski on May 30, 1945.

At the age of 79, Father Lawrence Severinus Brey died in the evening of November 26, 2006, in a rest home in Minnesota where he had been living for over a year. He suffered much from chronic leg trouble, which ultimately resulted in infection and inflammation that required daily treatment of cleansing and re-bandaging. Eventually he was unable to walk. Coupled with this disability was a cancerous spot on his tongue that was successfully removed. Because of these sufferings towards the end of his mortal life we can surely hope that his purgatory has been shortened.

Fr. Brey is a great example to all Catholics of moral courage, and final perseverance. He was a faithful son of Holy Mother Church. Through the bonds of faith, hope and charity he struggled in the darkest times of the Church, when the enemies attacked the Faith, as well as the faith of millions, right before his eyes. He stood firmly, and fought valiantly, with the God-given strength of thousands to preserve our Faith and the holy Mass. He assisted in thousands of conversions, through his service as a faithful Alter Christus his whole priestly life. May we never ever forget this brave and faithful warrior, yet kind and jolly priest, for the gifts he gave us all, and has left us of beautiful sermons, poems, prayers, and most importantly, the holy Mass.

Eternal rest grant unto him O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul, and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Please kindly offer prayers, sacrifices, and Masses for the repose of the soul of Fr. Lawrence Brey R.I.P. ~ Requiesat in pace ~

An indulgence of 7 years is granted to all the faithful with the last contrite heart, during the last half hour of the year and the first half hour of the following year, shall pray to the Most Holy Trinity in thanksgiving for benefits received; beseeching the same Holy Trinity for peace among Christians nations, for concord among Christians princes, for the conversion of sinners, and for the triumph of holy Mother Church.

ACTS OF THANKSGIVING TO THE MOST HOLY TRINITY

We offer to the Most Holy Trinity the merits of Jesus Christ in thanksgiving for the Precious Blood which He shed in the Garden for us; and by His merits we beseech the divine majesty to grant us the pardon of all our sins.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be to the Father, etc.

We offer to the Most Holy Trinity the merits of Jesus Christ, in thanksgiving for His most precious death endured on the cross for us; and by His merits we beseech the divine majesty to free us from the punishment due to our sins.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be to the Father, etc.

We offer to the Most Holy Trinity the merits of Jesus Christ, in thanksgiving for His unspeakable charity, by which He descended from heaven to earth to take upon Himself our flesh, and to suffer and die for us on the cross; and by His merits we beseech the divine majesty to bring our souls to the glory of heaven after our death.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be to the Father, etc.

(Indulgence of 100 days each time.- PIUS IX. June 18, 1876)

Most Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, behold us prostrate in Thy divine presence.  We humble ourselves profoundly and beg of Thee pardon for our sins.  We adore Thee, omnipotent Father, and with the outpouring of our hearts we thank Thee for having given us Thy divine Son Jesus to be our Redeemer, and for having left Him with us to the consummation of the world in the most august Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist, in which mystery of faith and love He reveals to us the wonders of His Sacred Heart.

(Please say one Glory Be to the Father, etc.)

O Divine Word, most adorable Jesus, our Redeemer, we adore Thee in Thy Sacrament, and with the outpouring of our hearts we thank Thee for having taken human flesh and for having made Thyself, for our redemption, both Priest and Victim in the sacrifice of the Cross, a sacrifice which, by an excess of the love of Thy adorable Sacred Heart, Thou dost renew every moment on our altars throughout the world.  O Supreme Priest, O divine Victim, grant us the grace to honor Thy holy sacrifice in the most adorable Eucharist with the homage of Mary most holy and of all Thy Holy Church, triumphant, suffering and warfare.  We offer ourselves wholly to Thee, and since Thou dost deign to have victims associated with Thee, accept our offering, and, uniting it with Thine, bless us.

(Say one Glory Be to the Father, etc.)

O Divine Spirit the Paraclete, we adore Thee and with the outpourings of our hearts we give Thee thanks that Thou hast, with such great love for us, wrought the ineffable blessings of the Incarnation of the Word of God, a blessing which is being continually extended and enlarged in the most august Sacrament of the Eucharist.  Ah, by this adorable mystery of love of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, do Thou grant unto us and all poor sinners Thy holy grace.  Pour forth Thy holy gifts upon us and upon all redeemed souls, and in an especial manner upon Holy Church, the spouse of Jesus Christ and our mother, upon its visible head, the supreme Roman Pontiff (omit prayer when seat is empty), upon all Cardinals, Bishops and Pastors of souls, upon Priests and all other ministers of Thy sanctuary.  Amen.

(Glory Be to the Father, etc.)

An indulgence of 3 years (S. C. Ind., Mar. 22, 1905; S. P. Ap., Dec. 9, 1932).  Raccolta No. 45

ACT OF THANKSGIVING FOR THE BLESSSINGS OF THE PAST YEAR

O God, the beginning and the end of all things, Who art always the selfsame, and Whose years fail not, we now, at the close of another year, kneel in adoration before Thee, and offer Thee our deepest gratitude for the fatherly care with which Thou has watched over us during the past, for the many times Thou hast shielded us from evils of soul and body, and for the numberless blessings, both temporal and spiritual, which Thou hast showered upon us. May it please Thee to accept the homage of our grateful hearts which we offer Thee in union with the infinite thanksgiving of Thy divine Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, Who with Thee liveth and reigneth forever and ever. Amen.

SUPPLICATION AND RESOLUTIONS FOR THE NEW YEAR

O Eternal Father, after having thanked thy infinite bounty for thy exceeding benefits in the past, we humbly implore pardon for our manifold sins and negligences, for the time we have consumed and wasted in vanities and in things that profit not unto salvation, and for the woeful want of correspondence with Thy graces which we have so habitually manifested.

But filled with confidence in Thy mercy, so lavishly displayed in a multitude of ways, we ask Thy blessings upon our good purposes and resolutions. For now we renew the sacred promises we made in Baptism, when we first became Thy children and heirs of the heavenly kingdom, and we renounce Satan with all his works and pomps.

Firmly convinced that the salvation of our immortal souls is the one great business of life, the purpose for which we have come into the world, we solemnly resolve for the future not only to do all in our power to avoid every grievous sin in thought, word, and deed but also to shun every unnecessary occasion that might imperil our souls. We further resolve to fulfill with greater exactness and fidelity the duties of our station in life, to give more attention to our progress in things spiritual, to be more devoted to holy Mass, to receive the Sacraments more frequently, and to pray more often and more fervently.

Bless, O my God, these good resolutions which we offer to Thee at this, the threshold of a new year. Give us Thy precious grace and make us truly wise. The days and years of our life are passing so swiftly away. Help us, in Thy mercy, to utilize them, as we ought to do, for Thy greater honor and glory, for the good of our neighbor, and for our sanctification. The night cometh in which no man can work longer; soon, at best, we shall have to appear before Thee to render an account of our stewardship. May we then be found worthy to receive from Thee that divine welcome: “Well done, good and faithful servants, enter into the joy of thy Lord.”

HYMN OF THANKSGIVING

(From the Te Deum)

Holy God, we praise Thy name!

Lord of all, we bow before Thee!

All on earth Thy scepter claim,

All in heav’n above adore Thee:

Infinite Thy vast domain,

Everlasting is Thy reign.

Hark! The loud celestial hymn,

Angel choirs above are raising!

Cherubim and seraphim,

In unceasing chorus praising,

Fill the heavens with sweet accord;

Holy, holy, holy Lord.

Holy father, holy Son,

Holy Spirit, three we name Thee,

While in essence only one,

Undivided God we claim Thee;

And adoring bend the knee,

While we own the mystery.

V. Let us bless the Father and the Son with the Holy Ghost.

R. Let us praise and exalt Him above all forever.

Let us Pray

O God, Whose mercy is without measure and the treasure of Whose goodness is infinite, we give thanks to Thy most comforting Majesty for the gifts conferred upon us, and we beg Thee continually through Thy clemency, that Thou Who grantest the request of those who ask Thee, mayest not abandon them now but rather dispose them for future rewards. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

OLD YEAR AND NEW YEAR

(From Lapsus est Annus)

A year is dead, a year is born;

Thus time flies by on silent wing:

Thou, Lord, alone canst guide our course

And safe to heaven Thy people bring.

For all past gifts we render thanks;

For graces new we humbly pray.

Oh, grant that we and those we love

May ne’er from faith and duty stray.

O Lord, our daily wants supply;

Protect from sickness and disease;

And deign to give, O God of love

The blessings of unbroken peace.

Oh, blot out all our ancient sins

And give us strength to fall no more;

When fight is o’er and victory won,

Then crown us on the eternal shore.

For all the old year’s sins we grieve;

Our hearts we consecrate to Thee.

Grant us, when all our years are sped,

Our heavenly father’s face to see.

PRAYER FOR A BLESSING ON THE NEW YEAR

O sacred and adorable Trinity, hear our prayers on behalf of our holy Father the Pope (omit prayer when chair of Peter is empty),, our Bishops, our clergy, and for all that are in authority over us. Bless, we beseech Thee, during the coming year, the whole Catholic Church; convert heretics and unbelievers; soften the hearts of sinners so that they may return to Thy friendship; give prosperity to our country and peace among the nations of the world; pour down Thy blessings upon our friends, relatives, and acquaintances, and upon our enemies, if we have any; assist the poor and the sick; have pity on the souls of those whom this year has taken from us; and do Thou be merciful to those who during the coming year will be summoned before Thy judgment seat. May all our actions be preceded by Thy inspirations and carried on by Thy assistance, so that all our prayers and works, having been begun in Thee, may likewise be ended through Thee. Amen.

THE SHORTNESS OF LIFE

(Psalm LXXXIX)

Lord, Thou hast been our refuge from generation to generation. Before the mountains were made, or the earth and the world was formed; from eternity to eternity Thou art God. Thou makest man to return to atoms, and sayest, return, ye children of men. For a thousand years in Thy sight are as yesterday when it is past,And as a watch in the night. Thou carriest them (men) away as with a flood; they are as a sleep. In the morning they are like grass which growth up. In the morning it flourisheth and growth up; in the evening it fadeth, growth dry, and withereth. For in Thin anger we are consumed, and in Thy wrath we are troubled. Thou hast set our iniquities before Thine eyes, our secret sins in the light of Thy countenance. For all our days are past away in Thy wrath; our years are consumed as a sigh. The days of our years are threescore and ten; and if in the strong they are fourscore years, yet their pride is but labor and sorrow; for it is soon past, and we fly away. Who knoweth the power of Thine anger,  and Thy wrath according to the fear that is due Thee? So teach us to number our days, that we may have a heart of wisdom. Return, O’Lord, how long? And be entreated in favor of Thy servants. O satisfy us in the morning with Thy loving-kindness, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days. Make us glad according to the days in which we have been afflicted and their years wherein we have seen evil. Look upon Thy servants and upon their works, and direct their children. And the gracious kindness of the Lord Our God be upon us, and direct Thou the works of our hands upon us; Yea, the work of our hands, do Thou direct.

 THE EVENING OF LIFE

(From the Rerum Deus)

O Strength, and stay upholden all creation,

who ever dost Thyself unmoved abide,

yet day by day the light in due gradation

from hour to hour through its changes guide:

Grant to life’s day a calm, unclouded ending,

and eve, untouched by shadows of decay,

 the brightness of a holy death-bed blending

 with dawning glories of th’ eternal day.

Hear us, O Father, gracious and forgiven,

And Thou, O Christ, the co-eternal Word,

Who, with the Holy Ghost, by all things living

Now and to endless ages art adored.

The Chair of Unity Octave
January 18th through January 25th

Saint PaulSaint Peter

The Chair of Unity Octave, which extends from the Feast of the Chair of St. Peter at Rome (January 18) until the Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul (January 25), which prayers are prescribed for each separate day of the Octave

History of The Chair of Unity Octave

On October 3, 1899, the eve of the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, the Rev. Lewis Thomas Wattson, an Episcopal clergyman later known as the Very Rev. Paul James Francis, S.A., arrived at Graymoor, N.Y. to establish a community of Episcopal Franciscans called the Friars of the Atonement. A year previously, Miss Lurana White, a devout young woman, had founded in the same place a community of Episcopal nuns known as the Sisters of the Atonement.

For ten years the two communities were jointly known as the Society of the Atonement and lived the monastic life as members of the Protestant Episcopal Church. Looking about him on a largely irreligious world, Father Paul grieved most because Christians seemed divided into warring sects and factions. He began to preach corporate reunion of the Episcopal Church with the Roman Catholic Church. Because of this he was banned from the pulpits of the Episcopal Church.

In his brown robe and sandals, Father Paul took his message to the streets and parks of New York. He caused quite a sensation. Father Paul James Francis was determined to carry on a vigorous apostolate for the return of all separated Christians to communion with the Holy See. To further this aim, he inaugurated in 1908 the Chair of Unity Octave (Jan. 18-25).

One year later, the members of the Society themselves received the grace of conversion, and on October 30, 1909, they entered the Catholic Church in a body. It astonished no one when he took his own advice and brought his community with him into the Catholic Church. With the blessing of Pope St. Pius X, they were permitted to continue as a religious society in the Catholic Church and were commissioned to carry on the apostolate of Christian unity as their community aim.

The Chair of Unity Octave was also approved as a Catholic devotion by Pope Benedict XV in an Apostolic Brief in 1916. In 1921, at their annual meeting in Washington, the Catholic hierarchy of the United States unanimously adopted the Octave for all the dioceses in the country.

Under the patronage of St. Peter, the first Vicar of Christ, Bishop of Rome, and St. Paul, the Apostle of the Gentiles, the Chair of Unity Octave has flourished and grown. It is now observed in many parts of the world.

Come with thy grace and heavenly aid,
And fill the hearts which thou hast made.

STAND

To thee, the Paraclete, we cry;
To thee, the Gift of God most high,
The Fount of life, the Fire of love,
The soul's Anointing from above.

The sevenfold gifts of grace are Thine,
O Finger of the Hand Divine;
True Promise of the Father thou,
Who dost the tongue with speech endow.

Thy light to every sense impart,
And shed thy love in every heart;
Thine own unfailing might supply
To strengthen our infirmity.

Drive far away our ghostly foe,
And Thine abiding peace bestow;
If thou be our preventing Guide,
No evil can our steps betide.

Make thou to us the Father known,
Teach us the eternal Son to own,
Be this our never changing creed,
That thou dost from them both proceed.

Our Father. Hail Mary.

V.  O God, make speed to save us.

Prayer for the Reunion of Christendom

Let us Pray.
O God, in thy mercy thou dost set aright those who have gone astray and thou dost save those whom thou hast gathered together.  We beseech thee to pour down upon all Christian people the grace of union with thee, so that putting aside disunion and attaching themselves to the true shepherd of thy Church, they may be able to serve thee humbly and lovingly.  Through Christ our Lord.
R.  Amen.

Prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary

O Immaculate Virgin, who was preserved by a singular privilege of grace from original sin, look down with pity upon our separated brethren, who are still thy children, and call them back to the center of unity. Even from afar, many have preserved a most tender devotion towards thee, O Mother. Reward them for their devotion by obtaining for them the grace of conversion. Victorious over the powers of hell from the very first moment of Thine existence, renew, now that the necessity is more urgent, thy triumphant progress, as in ages past. Glorify thy Son, O Mother, by bringing back to the one Fold his straying sheep.  And may it be thy glory, O Virgin Mary, to banish error from the earth, to put an end to disunity and to restore peace to the world.
R.  Amen.

V.  Our Lady of the Atonement, intercede for us.
R.  That there may be fulfilled the prayer of thy Divine Son: "That all may be one."

Prayer to St. Peter, Prince of the Apostles

O glorious Saint Peter, as a reward for thy lively and generous faith, profound and sincere humility, and ardent love, thou wast singled out by our Lord and endowed with most special privileges. Thou wast also constituted Prince of the Apostles, with primacy over the whole Church, of which thou wast made the Rock and Foundation. Obtain for us, we pray, a lively faith and an ardent zeal so that all of us will labor for the return of our separated brethren. May the desire of our divine Redeemer, that there might be but "one Fold and one Shepherd," be for us, as it was for thee, the inspiration to work and pray for the return of all those who are still outside the Fold. Strengthened by divine Grace, may they be led back speedily to the bosom of our common Mother, the Catholic Church.
R.  Amen.

V.  O ye holy Apostles Peter and Paul, pray for us.
R.  That we may be worthy of the promises of Christ.

Chair of Unity Octave hymn

That all be one O dearest Lord, we pray,
That all be drawn within Thy one true Fold,

And Thy true Faith she keeps, like saints of old.
O bring them back Good Shepherd of the sheep;
And rouse the heathen nations from their sleep.

Then praise we God the Father, God the Son,
And God the Holy Spirit, Three in One,
That one in Him and one together we
In unity may praise the Trinity,
Till all the ransomed fall before His Throne
And give all glory to our God alone.  Amen.

Prayer to our Lady, Help of Christians

O Mary, Virgin Immaculate, our Mother and Mother of our God, thou seest how the Catholic Faith is assailed by the devil and the world, that Faith in which we purpose, by the help of God, to live and to die ; do thou, O Help of Christians, renew thy victories as of old, for the salvation of thy children. To thee do we entrust our firm purpose of never joining the assemblies of the heretics. Do thou, all Holy, offer unto thy Divine Son our resolutions, and obtain from him the graces necessary for us to keep them unto the end.  Bring consolation to the Church, support and protect the Catholic clergy and people who proclaim thee Queen. Prayer for the Reunion of the East and West

Let us Pray.
O Lord, who hast united all nations in the confession of Thy Name, we pray Thee for the dissident Christian peoples of the East. Mindful of the place they have held in Thy Church, we beg of Thee to inspire them to occupy it again, so as to form with us one single fold, under the guidance of one and the same Shepherd. Grant that they, together with ourselves, may be penetrated with the teaching of their holy doctors, who are also our Fathers in the Faith. Grant us that the spirit of peace and charity, the mark of Thy presence among the faithful, may hasten the day in which their prayers may be united with ours, so that every people and every tongue may acknowledge and glorify thy Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ.
R.
 Amen.

Prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary

O Immaculate Virgin Mary, we thy servants and children, full of confidence in thy powerful protection, humbly beseech thee to implore of the Holy Ghost the abundance of his gifts for our brethren, the dissident Christians of the East. Enlightened by his quickening grace, may they return to the bosom of the Catholic Church. We pray also that our dissident Oriental brethren, once more united to us by the indissoluble bonds of the same faith and the same charity, may, with us, glorify, by the practice of good works, the most Holy Trinity, and at the same time pay homage to thee, O Virgin Mother of God, full of grace, now and forever.
R.
 Amen.

V.  Our Lady of the Atonement, intercede for us.
R.  That there may be fulfilled the prayer of thy Divine Son: "That all may be one."

Prayer to the Fathers of the Eastern Church

O ye glorious martyrs, St. Ignatius of Antioch and St. Polycarp of Smyrna; O ye illustrious doctors of the Church, St. Athanasius, St. John Chrysostom, and St. Basil, who worked and suffered so much for the purity of faith and the salvation of the souls entrusted to your paternal care, look down from heaven upon your beloved Eastern lands, which forgetful of your teaching and example, live now separated from the body of the true Church. By your powerful intercession, O ye holy Eastern Fathers, obtain for all separated Oriental Christians the grace to return to the centre of unity, and to form with us one and the same family, in Christ Jesus our Lord.
R.  Amen.

V.  Pray for us, O ye holy Fathers and Doctors of the Church.
R.  That we may be worthy of the promises of Christ.

Communion with the Apostolic See
Will banish schism in true unity.

Prayer for the Conversion of England

Let us Pray.
O Jesus, Good Shepherd, look down with favor upon the great and noble English nation. Converted to thee through the labors of St. Augustine and his companions, it was for many centuries rich in fruits of faith and sanctity. So devoted was this nation to thy holy and immaculate Mother that it was known throughout Christendom as the Dowry of Mary. When it was separated from thee in cruel fashion, many hundreds of its people willingly shed their blood in testimony of their loyalty to thee and thy Church. O loving Shepherd of souls, recall this great nation once more to the unity of thy Church, and grant peace of soul to all those now separated from thy flock.
R.  Amen.

Prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary

O Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, and our own most gentle Queen and Mother, look down in mercy upon England, thy Dowry, and upon us all who greatly hope and trust in thee.  Through thee it was that Jesus our Savior and our Hope was given unto the world; and he hath given thee to us that we might hope still more.  Plead for us thy children, whom thou didst receive and accept at the foot of the Cross, O sorrowful Mother.  Intercede for our separated English brethren, that they may be united with us in the one true Fold.  Pray for us all, dear Mother, that by faith fruitful in good works, we may all deserve to see and praise God together with thee in our heavenly home.
R.
 Amen.

V.  Our Lady of the Atonement, intercede for us.
R.  That there may be fulfilled the prayer of thy Divine Son: "That all may be one."

Prayer to the English Martyrs

O ye glorious Martyrs of England, St. Thomas More, St. John Fisher, and your companions, who, to sustain the voice of the supreme head of the true Church against the decrees of a wicked king, did willingly and courageously suffer death, pray now that the great nation to which ye belonged may once more return to the bosom of the Church from which it was so cruelly wrested.
R.  Amen.

V.  Pray for us, O ye holy Martyrs of England.
R.
That we may be worthy of the promises of Christ.

Chair of Unity Octave hymn

That all be one O dearest Lord, we pray,
That all be drawn within Thy one true Fold,
Back to Thy Church from which the wand'rers stray,
And Thy true Faith she keeps, like saints of old.
O bring them back Good Shepherd of the sheep;
And rouse the heathen nations from their sleep.

Then those whom thy great servant Gregory
Named "Angels" and to make them such, sent forth
Augustine and his forty monks, to free
From pagan thrall, and give their souls true worth;
Holy Mother Church be today a beacon bright
To lead them into Unity's true light.

Come, Holy Ghost, Creator blest,
Vouchsafe within our souls to rest;
Come with thy grace and heavenly aid,
And fill the hearts which thou hast made.

True Promise of the Father thou,
Who dost the tongue with speech endow.

Prayer for the Conversion of European Protestants

Let us Pray.
O most beloved Lord Jesus Christ, who hast redeemed the world at the price of thy most Precious Blood, look down in thy mercy upon the Christian peoples of Europe, who are still outside thy fold, and let the full light of thy truth shine upon them. Multiply, O God, the true messengers of thy Gospel, inspire them with fervor, make them fruitful in good works, and bless with thy grace their zeal and their labors, so that the separated Christians of Europe may be fully converted unto thee, their Creator and Redeemer. Recall the strayed sheep to thy fold, and the wanderers to the bosom of thy one true Church. Hasten, O dearest Savior, the happy advent of thy Kingdom on earth, draw all men to the treasures of thy Sacred Heart, so that all may share in the priceless benefits of thy Redemption and in the eternal happiness of Heaven.
R.  Amen.

Prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary

O Mary, Mother of mercy and refuge of sinners, we beseech thee to look with pitying eyes upon the Protestant peoples of Europe. O seat of wisdom, enlighten their minds, that they may come to know that the Catholic Church is the one True Church of Christ. Complete their conversion by obtaining for them the grace to believe every truth of our holy Faith, and to submit themselves to the Holy Catholic Church, the Bride of Jesus Christ on earth. Once more united to us by bonds of divine charity, they will sing with us forever thy glorious praises: "Rejoice, O Virgin Mary, alone hast thou destroyed all error throughout the whole world."
R.  Amen.

V.  Our Lady of the Atonement, intercede for us.
R.  That there may be fulfilled the prayer of thy Divine Son: "That all may be one."

Prayer to St. Bridget of Sweden

With trusting hearts we turn to thee, O blessed Bridget, in these hostile and unbelieving days, to implore thine intercession in behalf of those who are separated from the Church of Jesus Christ. By that clear knowledge thou didst have of the bitter sufferings of our crucified Redeemer, the price of our salvation, we offer thee our supplications to obtain the grace of faith for those who are outside the one true fold, that so the sheep who are scattered may return to the one true Shepherd, our Lord Jesus Christ.
R.  Amen.

V.  Pray for us, St. Bridget.

Prayer for the Conversion of America

Let us Pray.
O Lord Jesus Christ, grant unto all thy servants, but especially to the people of our own nation, the grace of being fully united with thee in Thy Church. O divine Redeemer, of whom the prophet sang "all the kings of the earth shall adore Him, and all the nations shall serve Him," extend thy Kingdom over the entire human race, but especially over our own beloved country. Grant in thy Mercy that the people of our land may be converted unto thee, and humbly and lovingly serve thee. This we ask, O Savior, through the intercession of Thine Immaculate Mother, the patroness and protector of our nation.
R.  Amen.

Prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary

O most holy Virgin, who wast pleasing to the Lord and became his Mother, immaculate in body and spirit, in faith and in love, look down upon us poor sinners. We now implore thy powerful patronage for all the people of our beloved land. The wicked serpent, against whom the first curse was hurled, continueth fiercely to attack and ensnare the unhappy children of Eve. O Blessed Mother, our Queen and our advocate, who crushed the head of the enemy from the very first moment of Thine existence, receive from us the prayers which we implore thee to present at the throne of God. Pray that we may never fall into the snares laid out for us, and that we may all arrive at the harbor of salvation. May the Church and Christian society, now in so many dangers, sing once again the hymn of deliverance, of victory, and of peace.
R.  Amen.

Prayer in Honor of the North American Martyrs

O God, Who by the preaching and blood of Thy holy Martyrs, Isaac Jogues and John Brebeuf and their companions, didst consecrate the first fruits of the Faith in the vast regions of North America, graciously grant that, by their intercession the flourishing harvest of Christians may everywhere and always be increased. Through Jesus Christ, Thy Son, our Lord, who with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, liveth and reigneth, God, for ever and ever.

Prayer for Lapsed Catholics

Let us Pray.
O Almighty Father, who desirest not the death of the sinner, but rather that he be converted and live, pour out upon us thy mercy and hear the prayers of thy servants. Soften the hearts of thy children who have strayed from the true paths, which thou didst establish for their salvation. They are now forgetful of their duties as Catholics, and pursue only the transitory pleasures of the world. Grant that they may speedily return to the practice of every Christian virtue, so that their lives may shine with the integrity of faith, the fervor of piety and the ardor of charity. Restore all of them to thy sacraments and to the life of thy grace, through the merits of the Most Precious Blood of thy Son, our Savior Jesus Christ.
R.  Amen.

Prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary

O Mother of Jesus Christ and our Mother, we pray thee to obtain for us the grace of serving God faithfully in this world that we may have the happiness of loving him eternally in heaven. Hear the prayers that we address to thee, O Mother. Defend us against the enemies of our salvation, and against our own infirmities. Obtain for us pardon for our sins and perseverance in the determination never to fall away again. We implore thee to take under thy protection those who have abandoned the practice of their Catholic duties. May they be converted again and become faithful servants of thy Son. O Mother of Mercy, be for us all "the cause of our joy" and shew unto us Jesus Christ, thy Son, as thy gift to us both for time and for eternity.

Obtain for us also, a true love of our Holy Mother the Church, and keep us ever zealous in the fulfillment of our religious duties. We pray to thee today to intercede for those who have wandered from the Church which Christ established for their salvation. Through Thine intercession, may they receive from God the grace to return speedily to their Father's house, so that on earth they may enjoy peace and tranquility, and one day attain everlasting happiness in heaven.

To thee, the Paraclete, we cry;
To thee, the Gift of God most high,
The Fount of life, the Fire of love,
The soul's Anointing from above.

The sevenfold gifts of grace are Thine,
O Finger of the Hand Divine;
True Promise of the Father thou,
Who dost the tongue with speech endow.

Thy light to every sense impart,
And shed thy love in every heart;
Thine own unfailing might supply
To strengthen our infirmity.

Drive far away our ghostly foe,
And Thine abiding peace bestow;
If thou be our preventing Guide,
No evil can our steps betide.

Make thou to us the Father known,
Teach us the eternal Son to own,
Be this our never changing creed,
That thou dost from them both proceed.

Proper Doxology

From death to endless life restored;
Whom with the Father we adore,
And Holy Ghost, for evermore.  Amen.

Our Father. Hail Mary.

V.  O God, make speed to save us.

Prayer for the Conversion of the Jews

Let us pray.
O God, who dost manifest thy mercy and compassion towards all peoples, have mercy upon the Jewish race, once thy chosen people. Thou didst select them alone out of all the nations of the world to be the custodians of thy sacred teachings. From them thou didst raise up prophets and patriarchs to announce the coming of the Redeemer. Thou didst will that Thine only Son, Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior should be a Jew according to the flesh, born of a Jewish maiden in the Land of Promise. Hear the prayers we offer thee today for the conversion of the Jewish people. Grant that they may soon come to a knowledge and love of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Messiah foretold by their prophets, and that they may walk with us in the way of salvation.
R.  Amen.

Prayer of the Congregation of Our Lady of Sion

O God of all goodness, and Father of mercies, we beseech thee, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and by the intercession of the Patriarchs and holy Apostles, to cast a look of compassion upon the children of Israel, that they may be brought to the knowledge of our only Savior, Jesus Christ, and may partake of the precious fruits of the Redemption.
R.
 Amen.

V.  Our Lady of the Atonement, intercede for us.
R.  That there may be fulfilled the prayer of thy Divine Son: "That all may be one."

Prayer to St. Paul

O holy Apostle, Paul of Tarsus, from thy glorious place in heaven look down upon the race that thou didst love so well. True it is that many of them remained deaf to thy words of truth, and that some of them even stirred up persecution against thee and thy fellow believers. But thou wast so devoted to thy people that thou didst will to become a castaway for the sake of their conversion. Now that thou art glorious in heaven, obtain for thy brethren the grace of repentance and conversion, so that they may finally take their rightful place in the great family of the Catholic Church.
R.  Amen.

V.  O ye Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, pray for us.
R.  That we may be worthy of the promises of Christ.

A short sermon or instruction

Chair of Unity Octave hymn

That all be one O dearest Lord, we pray,
That all be drawn within Thy one true Fold,
Back to Thy Church from which the wand'rers stray,
And Thy true Faith she keeps, like saints of old.
O bring them back Good Shepherd of the sheep;
And rouse the heathen nations from their sleep.

Those Sinai's thunders startled, Thine own race,
Who heard thy Prophets, saw thy miracles,
Who nailed thee to the Cross, despised thy grace:
From their veiled eyes, O Lord, remove the scales:
The Wandering Jew who owned thee not, now claim!
And Israel bend the knee to Jesus' Name.

Hasten, by the power of thy prayers, the day when all nations shall be gathered together in the one true Fold.

O GOD the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, our only Savior, the Prince of Peace: Give us grace seriously to lay to heart the great dangers we are in by our unhappy divisions. Take away all hatred, prejudice, and error, and whatsoever else may hinder us from godly union and concord: that, as there is but one Body, and one Spirit, and one hope of our calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of us all; so we may henceforth be all of one heart, and of one soul, united in one holy bond of truth and peace, of faith and charity, and with one mind and one mouth glorify thee; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Prayer for the Conversion of our Brethren

Let us Pray.
Eternal God, Creator of all things, remember that the souls of unbelievers have been created by thee, and formed to Thine own image and likeness.  Behold, O Lord, how to thy dishonor hell is being filled with these same souls.  Remember, O God, that for their salvation thy Son Jesus Christ underwent a most cruel death.  Permit not, O Lord, that thy divine Son be any longer despised by unbelievers; but be appeased by the prayers of the Saints and of the Church, the Spouse of thy most holy Son, and forgetting their idolatry and unbelief, grant that they may at last come to acknowledge thy Son Jesus Christ, who is our Salvation, Life and Resurrection, through whom we have been saved and redeemed; to whom be glory forever and ever.
R.  Amen.

Prayer for Catholic Missions

Let us Pray.
O God, Who wouldest have all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth, we beseech thee, send forth labórers into thy harvest, and grant them with all boldness to preach the Word that thy Gospel may everywhere be heard and glorified, and that all nations may know thee, the One True God, and him whom thou hast sent, Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Our Lord.
R.  Amen.

Prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary

Blessed Mother of God, whose stainless heart is full of mercy and compassion, look down in pity upon those who have not yet heard the tidings of the Gospel. Remember that they are the work of the hand of thy Son, that they have been created in his image and redeemed by his most Precious Blood. Obtain for these poor brethren of ours the knowledge of our holy faith, and the grace to love, to embrace, and to practice it faithfully. Intercede at the throne of the Most High, O Mother, that many more missionaries may be sent to pagan lands, there to win souls for thy divine Son. O Virgin Mother of God, pray that all of us may soon be united in one and the same hope, and in one and the same love. Attentive to the words of thy divine Son, may we dwell in peace and happiness in the Church he instituted for our own salvation.
R.  Amen.

V.  Our Lady of the Atonement, intercede for us.
R.  That there may be fulfilled the prayer of thy Divine Son: "That all may be one."

Prayer to St. Paul

O glorious St. Paul, from a persecutor of the Christian name thou didst become an Apostle of burning zeal, and in order that Jesus Christ might become known to the furthermost bounds of the earth, thou didst joyfully suffer imprisonment, scourging, stoning, shipwreck, and every kind of persecution. Obtain for us now the grace at all times to pray for those who are not as yet blessed with the gift of faith. Help us to use all our strength for the conversion of those who, as yet, have not heard the Name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
R.  Amen.

V.  O ye Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, pray for us.
R.  That we may be worthy of the promises of Christ.

PRAYER FOR ANOTHER'S CONVERSION

O Divine and adorable Savior, thou who art the Way, the Truth, and the Life, I beseech thee to have mercy upon (N.) and bring him to the knowledge and love of Thy Truth. Thou, O Lord, knowest all his darkness, his  weakness, and his doubts; have pity upon him, O merciful Savior; let the bright beams of Thy Eternal Truth shine upon his mind; clear away the cloud of error and of prejudice from his eyes, and may he himself submit to the teaching of Thy Church. Oh, let not the soul for whom I pray, be shut out from Thy blesses fold!  Unite him to Thyself in the sacraments of Thy love and grant that partaking of the blessings of Thy grace in this life, he may come at last to the possession of those eternal rewards which Thou hast promised to all who believe in Thee, and who do Thy will. Hear this my petition, O merciful Jesus, Who, with the Father and the Holy Ghost, livest and reignest for ever and ever. Amen.
